Lets face it, cost is a major concern for most people no matter what is being purchased. Why should a funeral be any different? Many traditional funerals average around ten thousand dollars or more and therefore, it is no surprise that affordable alternatives have become increasingly popular.

Each year more and more families are choosing cremation as an alternative to a tradition funeral. Statistics show that in 2011, 70% of families who make funeral arrangements will select cremation as it is more environmentally friendly and much more affordable.
Every funeral home offers a basic cremation, however, due to high overhead, many funeral homes charge extraordinary prices for this service.

During the trying time of losing a loved one, it is particularly difficult to “shop” for a fair and affordable price so in order to alleviate any extra stress we have done the work for you. These prices have been taken from the most recent price lists provided to us by the actual funeral establishment listed.

Choosing Cremation over Burial

When it comes to laying a loved one to rest, there are few options: cremation and burial. While this decision can be primarily made based on personal and emotional reasons, there are some important factors one should consider when deciding which to choose. With cremation rates on the rise in Canada, it is important to understand the reasons for this steady increase.

From an environmental standpoint, cremation is a much greener choice than burial. Every year across North America, over 23 000 cemeteries bury over 900 000 gallons of embalming fluid containing a cocktail of hazardous chemicals that seep into our water table. Cremation on the other hand offers no chemical pollution from the embalming procedure, as it typically does not take place before cremation. Sidestepping the embalming procedure also protects families from the thought of an extremely invasive procedure. Also, with the increasing concern of emissions in the atmosphere, Crematoriums are very heavily regulated by the Ministry of Environment. In fact, the traditional chimney will no longer be present in new crematoriums and they will be so efficient and clean that there will be no emissions to the atmosphere at all.

Another reason why families are choosing cremation over burial is the reduced cost of associated services with the cremation process. Not only are they less expensive, but families actually are beginning to prefer memorial services with an urn or picture present as a focal point instead of the traditional and often disturbing open casket.

The latest trend is holding memorial services without the presence of a funeral home. There is no reason why, after the cremation is complete, families can’t hold service in a church or hall. Once the venue is booked, all that’s left to do is arrive. It’s very easy to book a minister, funeral celebrant or even have a few friends or family members deliver eulogies or share memories. There are service providers that offer families affordable options, however, they are few and hard to find.
